Most people know me as D and this isn’t easy for me to ask. My brother died after a battle with cancer at the beginning of the month. The services are next week near Ft. Lauderdale.

The total estimated cost for barebones travel, car rental, and food is $2,548. This includes a motel for one night and rental costs that unexpectedly increased and GoFundMe fees.

I’ve always tried to handle things on my own and live frugally, but right now I’m hoping to do something that means more to me than I can easily put into words – I want to see my family.

After waiting to hear from my sisters and son about their travel plans, I had the trip set in my heart. I made careful plans, thinking I understood the costs. What I didn't anticipate was how quickly and dramatically rental car prices would increase – the cost ended up nearly four times what I expected. Like everything else right now, prices have climbed.

Even so, I reserved the car in faith, hoping I might reach enough people who understand how meaningful this reunion would be.

Time with family feels precious in times of loss. Reconnecting, being together, sharing pictures, and not taking that time for granted matters deeply to me.
