Hey everybody, I’m making this page to help out my family through this difficult time. On October 24th, my cousin Denil Hernandez—better known as Toto—was taken into custody by ICE. Toto and his family came to the United States from Honduras in 2017 in search of a better life. Their first years here were filled with challenges as they worked hard to adjust to a new country, all while remaining grateful for the opportunity to build a stronger foundation for their family.
Over the years, Toto overcame many obstacles that immigrants face. He learned English, graduated high school, got a job, and at the time of his arrest, he was enrolled at Cal State Northridge. Toto is a good man—funny, smart, and always willing to lend a helping hand. He is not a criminal, but unfortunately, he was caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. He is currently being held at the Adelanto Detention Facility and has been there for over two months. As many know, the conditions in these ICE facilities can be extremely cruel. His family has already reached out to immigration attorneys, but the costs are overwhelming, reaching into the tens of thousands of dollars. His father has even raffled off his truck to try to raise funds.
This is why I decided to create this page. I hope to raise any amount possible to help ease their stress and support Denil’s legal fight—not only to get him out of detention but to help him stay in the U.S. for good. Any support you can give would mean the world to us, especially during the holidays, which have been so hard for his family. Hola a todos. Estoy creando esta página para apoyar a mi familia en un momento bien difícil. El 24 de octubre, mi primo Denil Hernández—mejor conocido como Toto—fue detenido por ICE. Toto y su familia llegaron a Estados Unidos desde Honduras en 2017 buscando una vida mejor. Sus primeros años aquí fueron una lucha: adaptarse a otro país, otro idioma y empezar desde cero. Pero aun así, siempre estuvieron agradecidos por la oportunidad de construir algo más estable para su familia. Con el tiempo, Toto le echó ganas y salió adelante, superando muchos de los obstáculos que enfrentan los inmigrantes. Aprendió inglés, se graduó de la high school, consiguió trabajo y, cuando lo arrestaron, estaba estudiando en Cal State Northridge. Toto es un buen chavo: buena onda, inteligente y siempre dispuesto a echar la mano. Él no es un criminal; simplemente estuvo en el lugar equivocado en el momento equivocado. Ahorita está detenido en Adelanto Detention Facility y ya lleva más de dos meses ahí. Como muchos saben, las condiciones en esos centros pueden ser muy duras, hasta inhumanas. Su familia ya buscó abogados de inmigración, pero todo es carísimo, hablamos de decenas de miles de dólares. Su papá hasta rifó su troca para juntar dinero. Por eso decidí hacer esta página. Quiero levantar lo que se pueda para ayudarles con este peso y apoyar la lucha legal de Denil, no solo para sacarlo de detención, sino para que pueda quedarse en este país de manera definitiva. Cualquier ayuda, por pequeña que sea, nos va a servir muchísimo, especialmente en estas fechas que han sido tan pesadas para la familia.
