Help Demetrius Meet Expenses Following Accident

My name is Demetrius Francis, a Howard University student who was the victim of a hit and run incident that occurred on Georgia Avenue NW early Sunday morning.

 

A week after recovering from covid-19, I was walking with a few friends towards U Street as we crossed Georgia Avenue NW in front of the student health center. As I was almost across the street, a dark colored vehicle (who I was told didn’t have their lights on and was speeding) struck me and another pedestrian before speeding off. I hit my head on the vehicle and later the concrete before being knocked unconscious while the other pedestrian had a seizure triggered by the incident. We both were transported to Howard University Hospital where I awoke early Sunday morning. The nurse told me what happened and said I had a right shoulder fracture and there was some internal bleeding in my head while more scans had to be run. Thankfully I don’t have a concussion or require any surgery but I do have to wear an arm sling for a few weeks while my shoulder heals and take medication to reduce the risk of nausea and seizures.

 

This incident has shown me how quickly accidents can happen and how quickly life can be taken. It’s also placed my mental health in a compromised position as I still have yet to be able to process what happened. Overall, I am in good spirits and I’m very appreciative of all of the support and prayers my friends and family have given me. I do still need some help as I will be out of work for at least two weeks and have fallen behind on a few bills from my time being out of work from covid and now this.

 

Nothing could’ve prepared me for what happened early sunday morning but I will make a full recovery and this will only make me stronger. A police report has been filed and while the wrongdoer hasn’t been identified just yet, I am very hopeful that justice will be served. I thank you for reading my story, the prayers, the shares and support and I hope that no one else will have to be a victim of such negligence and trauma.
