Our beloved Bernese Mountain Dog, Della, has been a constant source of love and comfort for our family since she was a puppy. She’s grown up alongside our three young children, always doting on them and spreading joy wherever she goes. Della has even accompanied me to classes at my former university, brightening the days of students and faculty with her gentle nature. She’s been by my side through some of our family’s most joyful moments, during my PhD defense and our marriage, and our toughest moments, including when our youngest spent time in the NICU, offering comfort and companionship when we needed it most.
On Wednesday evening, our world was turned upside down when Della was diagnosed with GVD (Bloat), a life-threatening condition. We rushed her to the vet, and after a frantic night, she underwent emergency surgery to save her life. The costs for her surgery, diagnostic imaging, and ongoing treatment for her heart have quickly become overwhelming. Della is currently recovering and receiving medication for her heart, which has been affected by the surgery. Our vet has reassured us that these complications are common, and Della is expected to make a recovery, but the road ahead is still uncertain.
Despite both of us working hard—my husband as a lab tech and myself as a professor—the financial burden of Della’s care is more than we can manage alone. We are doing everything we can to bring her home and give her the best chance at a full recovery. Any support, no matter the amount, would mean the world to us and help us keep our sweet girl with the family she loves so much.
