Delio’s recovery from COVID-19

We are a group of Hamilton artists working on raising funds to help our friend Delio Delgado recover from COVID-19.   He was first admitted in early March and was re-infected with the virus a second time while he was in the hospital. As a diabetic he had to undergo dialysis as well. His life teetered on a knife’s edge as the tireless health-care workers at St. Josephs Hospital attended to frightening episodes of respiratory and kidney breakdowns. On March 29, hospital staff contacted his family to prepare them for the worst.

While he has made it out of the ICU, his recovery will be a long process.

We want to give him a fighting chance by providing financial assistance towards 1) his mother’s return airfare, and 2) payment of Delio’s apartment rent (owing and ahead for 3 months).

Delio lives alone and his mother lives in the Dominican Republic. Being his mom, she is ready to come and support him when he leaves the hospital. Rosa is currently waiting for a visa to Canada. She has been vaccinated and is allowed to travel.

Please help us bring Rosa to look after her only son, and to get Delio back on his feet.

A bit more about Delio:

He is a visual artist who has made a significant contribution to contemporary art in Hamilton. The photo above is of the group of artists he accompanied to Cuba.

Artist’s Statement – Delio Delgado

Though my earlier works held much in common with non-representational Latin American modernist painting, my current practice is print-based. Using etching, lithography, screen and digital printing, I incorporate found and hand-drawn imagery to create prints that explore notions of place and migration. Formally my compositional style is influenced by collage, numerical calculations; recent visual signifiers within my work have ranged from architectural blueprints, to maps, boats and my own self-portrait. The content of my work addresses my own experience of migrating from the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean to Canada. The act of mark-making mirrors the literal and figurative foot/imprints that I forge in my new existence which contain traces of my previous life. The uneasy relationship between the vestiges of colonization, Canada’s official mandate of multiculturalism and the actual realities attached to the politics of “belonging” and “inclusion” are additional themes that I explore in my work. The insertion of drawn elements disrupts the order that is often inherent in architectural drawings, introducing an element of chance and randomness to the work, much in the same way that actual diversity and immigration challenge the status quo.
