Hi, everyone! I am creating this GoFundMe to help raise funds for an ankle reconstruction surgery. Today I found out that this surgery needs to happen as soon as possible. Without the surgery, I will eventually lose function in my ankle. This will prohibit me from being able to live a normal healthy life. Unfortunately, I found out this life changing surgery will cost $7,000 out of pocket. Any additional funds will be used for the costs of recovery. As a current UCSD grad student, this is completely out of my budget. I'd like to point out this procedure costs around $40k in the US, giving me no other option than to have this procedure done in Tijuana, Mexico. Now I am turning to my family and friends for help. I understand money is tight right now, so I would truly appreciate anything you can offer, or if you can share this page with your loved ones. Before I get into the details, I'd like to share a little about me. My name is Deisy Celis. I'm a first generation college student getting my Master's Degree in Public Health. I come from a low-income and migrant background. During this pandemic, it has been especially challenging to save up as I am my family's financial provider. My passion is working everyday to promote wellbeing and improve health outcomes among historically underserved communities.. On my free time, I love playing with my dogs and playing board games with loved ones.
In 2011, I was in a critical and life changing bike accident. I was hit by a car that ran a stop sign, Ieaving me with a traumatic brain injury and completely ruptured ligaments in my right leg. My head was cracked open and I was in crutches for half a year, and limped for over a year. I had to get to and from school on my own through the pain because my parents didn’t have a car. The lack of a car affected my ability to completely heal and limited my access to treatment including physical therapy. Throughout the years, this chronic pain has become progressively worse. Sometimes the pain is so unbearable that I get chills running through my spine. I can no longer go on walks or runs and enjoy them without the fear of further injury or permanent damage. As a former track and cross country runner, it is heartbreaking to no longer be able to do the activity I love the most. To those who know me, long distance running is a way of life for me. Running has brought me peace and inspiration through difficult periods in my life. This reconstruction surgery gives me hope that I can live free of the chronic pain that has been gripping my life the past 10 years. I thank you for reading my story and hope you share!
