My mom, Edith Campbell—who everyone calls Dee—has always been a fighter. She’s 73 years old, completely blind, and living with COPD. Every day brings new challenges, but Dee faces them with a sense of humor and a love for sports and soap operas that keeps her spirits high. Since losing her sight, Alexa has become her shield and armor, helping her navigate a world that isn’t built for someone who can’t see. But as her COPD has progressed, her needs have grown far beyond what standard senior care can provide.
Dee’s safety and independence depend on specialized tools and support. She needs talking medical devices—like voice-enabled pulse oximeters and blood pressure monitors—so she can manage her health without needing to see a screen. We’re working to set up a smart home environment, with voice controls for lights, medication reminders, and emergency calls. Home modifications are also essential: tactile labels, grab bars, and auditory smoke detectors will help her move around safely. On top of that, Dee needs professional home care and medical transport for her frequent appointments, as well as medical-grade air filtration to protect her sensitive lungs.
I’m also a stroke survivor, and Dee is my only support. The financial strain of trying to help each other is impossible for us to manage alone. We’re reaching out for help because these costs are overwhelming for our family. Every dollar raised will go directly to making Dee’s home safer and her life more comfortable. Any support—no matter the amount—would mean the world to us. Thank you for reading Dee’s story and for considering a gift that will help her live with dignity and hope.
1. The "Talking" Medical Suite
Since she has COPD, she needs to know her oxygen levels and heart rate constantly.
SmartHeart Talking Pulse Oximeter (~$40): This is one of the most reliable 2026 models for the blind. It clips on the finger and clearly speaks the SpO_2 (oxygen) and pulse rate.
A&D Medical Talking Blood Pressure Monitor (~$110): A common complication with COPD is heart strain; this monitor gives loud, clear audio instructions and results.
Talking Thermometer (~$25): Essential for catching infections early, which is critical for someone with compromised lungs.
2. The "Independence" Upgrades
WayTag / WayAround Starter Kit (~$50–$100): These are small stickers or tags you can put on her nebulizer, oxygen concentrator, or even medication bottles. She can tap them with a smartphone (or a dedicated scanner), and it will play a recording of what the item is and how to use it.
Voice-Controlled Smart Hub (~$100): An Amazon Echo or Google Nest. She can say, "Call [Your Name]" or "Set a timer for my breathing treatment" without needing to see a single button.
3. Professional Air Management
Medical-Grade HEPA Filter (~$500 - $900): For COPD, the air has to be pristine. Brands like IQAir or Blueair make units that can significantly reduce the "heavy" feeling in the air for her.
