Help Deborah Recover From Emergency Brain Surgery

On Sunday, Feb 25 around 8am Deborah was enjoying her morning, feeding the birds when out of nowhere she slipped, fell and hit her head very hard. What we thought was a small bump on her head ended up being so much worse. An ambulance was called to take her to the ER where the neruo surgeon informed us due to the severity of the injury she needed to be airlifted to a Level 1 Trauma Center immediately. After arriving, she was given another CT scan which showed even more bad news. Deborah was bleeding from the brain. She had 8mm of blood covering her left lobe which caused her brain to shift 8mm off center. It was life threatening. The 4.5 hour surgery was a success but it was an extremely invasive surgery. A piece of her skull was temporarily removed to relieve the swelling and fix the bleeding. Parts of her head were shaven and she has over 80 staples going down the center of her skull.

Recovery so far has not been easy. Deborah has spent 14 days in the ICU with CT scans still showing swelling in her brain. While she is progressing slowly she is also struggling. She has very little to no movement of her right hand (which is her dominant hand), she is having a hard time staying awake/opening her eyes and is having a very difficult time speaking. She also becomes confused and has difficulty responding to questions. The only thing we can do is take this one day at a time, pray to God for her full recovery and do our best to be there for her in every way possible.

As the doctors have said this was a very traumatic fall, a very serious surgery and it will take time for Deborah to fully recover. We are preparing for the long road ahead - remaining days in the hospital, intensive physical therapy, in home care, speech therapy and anything else Deborah will need to help her make a full recovery.

Deborah is the most kind, loving person with a heart of gold. A beautiful person inside and out with the ability to light up any room she steps into. A woman filled with faith and love for her family. Someone who is always willing to put others before herself. Deborah is truly one of a kind, a loving mother, grandmother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. Anyone who knows her will say - she radiates kindness and is as vibrant as a sunset on a summer's night.

Deborah just celebrated her 69th birthday in January, she has an Interior Design business which has been her passion for over 40 years, she cares for her family, her home and enjoys adventures with her Grandson. Previous to this injury Deborah has been grieving the loss of her mother and has been caring for her 93 year old Father. This traumatic event has completely turned her life upside down right when she was starting to see things in a better light. This is not only going to be a struggle for her physically but also mentally and emotionally.

Deborah is still in the ICU but once she is moved to an intermediate care room flowers, cards and notes of support are greatly appreciated. If you would like to help support Deborah's recovery please consider donating. We want to make sure she has the means to receive the best care while recovering from this traumatic injury.

Thank you for supporting Deborah - we are grateful for each and every one of you ♥️

Update 3/11: My mom has now spent 15 days in the ICU. She is progressing daily but still has had her struggles. She had a small seziure in her brain a few days ago which landed her back in the ICU after only being out for less than an hour. She was sleeping most of the day, hard to wake and was barely speaking. But after a few more days in the ICU and thorough testing - the doctors believe she is on the right track and is ready to start her recovery. We are hopeful this week she will be moved to a rehabilitation center where she will spend the next month in all sorts of therapies.

Update 3/15: After 21 days in the ICU Deborah has finally been moved to an Intermediate Neuro Care room and will be transferred to the rehibilitaion center soon! She will be there for 2 to 3 weeks with a recovery outlook of 6 months to a year. This has been a very difficult road for my Mom and there is still a long road ahead but we are grateful for these small steps in a positive direction.

Update 3/19: Deborah has been transferred to a Rehilbilation Center! She has regained movement in her right hand, her speech is becoming more clear everyday, she is progressing with her movements and regaining her strength more and more. The last CT scan still showed minimal swelling which may be causing her vision to be fuzzy, continued lethargy and confusion. While Deborah is still far from "back to normal" we are so happy to see her progression over the last few weeks! Please continue to pray for my mom and her road to recovery.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out about helping my mom. Thank you for your prayers. & Thank you to everyone who has so graciously donated. Your kindness and support truly mean so much. ♥️
