My sister Debbie is the most generous and caring person I know. She has always put others before herself, whether it’s giving away her last bit of food or opening her home to animals in need. A few years ago, Debbie’s life was turned upside down when she was forced to leave her home in New Jersey by her abusive, now ex-husband. With her teenage son Angelo and her rescue dogs and cats, she made the difficult journey to Alabama—a place where she had no family, only the promise of temporary shelter from a friend. Debbie is disabled and suffers from severe arthritis, making every day a challenge. At that point, she had already endured the unimaginable loss of two of her four children. Despite having almost nothing, she refused to abandon her pets and did everything she could to keep her family together. Our family helped as much as we could, but resources were limited. Eventually, Debbie and Angelo found a small apartment, and Debbie continued her passion for rescuing and fostering abused and neglected animals. Angelo was able to return to New Jersey for college, but tragically, he passed away a few months ago after struggling with mental health issues. Debbie has now lost three of her four children, a pain no mother should ever have to bear. Through it all, she still puts her animals first, often going hungry so they can eat. She was not able to afford a service for Angelo, and she remains alone in Alabama, far from family and support. Debbie’s immediate needs are food, pet supplies, and funds for clothing and airfare to attend her son Eddy’s wedding in May. This is a rare chance for her to be with her surviving child and celebrate a joyful milestone after so much loss.
