DeAnne is a 63-year-old widow who has spent her entire life working hard and caring for others. Born with spina bifida and living with scoliosis and chronic hip problems, she has still worked since she was a teenager—running her own one-woman cleaning business and cleaning a busy nail salon at night. Most of her other clients are elderly, and she treats her work as a ministry, often helping them with repairs and looking out for their safety. But despite working as much as her body allows, DeAnne has gone 15 years without medical insurance and 25 years without dental insurance. She earns too much for Medicaid but not enough to afford private coverage, and most months she has to choose between groceries and health care. After years of untreated dental issues, several of DeAnne’s crowns broke, the teeth underneath fractured, and one developed a severe abscess. On December 5th she required emergency procedures: three extractions and bone grafts. Two more broken teeth still need to be removed. The reconstructive work ahead includes additional bone grafts, bridges, and everything needed to restore her ability to eat and live without pain. We are actively exploring dental schools and lower-cost options, but even the least expensive path is far beyond what she can manage. DeAnne never asks for help. She is the longtime love of my brother Stephen, a retired DFCS social worker living on a modest pension, and together they simply cannot shoulder these costs. If you feel moved to help DeAnne relieve her pain and rebuild her dental health, any contribution means more than you know. Thank you for supporting someone who has spent her life supporting others.
