Our beloved Deanna is facing a battle no family should ever have to endure. She has been diagnosed with Stage IV small cell lung cancer, and every single day since that moment has been a fight for her life. The cancer has metastasized to her bones, liver, and lymph nodes and is not curable. Despite unthinkable pain, fear, and uncertainty, Deanna continues to show a strength and tenderness that leaves everyone around her in awe.
She has undergone five grueling rounds of chemotherapy, followed by maintenance treatments every three weeks. She also completed 30 rounds of radiation. When doctors began Tarlatamab immunotherapy in July, they prayed it would offer hope. Instead, it brought a storm of terrifying complications. After weeks of infusions, Deanna suddenly became delusional, fevered, swollen, and dangerously sick. She lost weight rapidly, stopped eating, and has been hospitalized six times.
Through all of this, she has barely had a chance to catch her breath.
On November 3rd, Deanna bravely resumed treatment, even though her body and spirit are exhausted. She wants more time — time with her children, her grandchildren, her husband, and the animals she loves so deeply. But the fight is taking everything out of her.
Deanna is unable to work, and her husband Nick is doing everything humanly possible to care for her while still working full-time to keep their family afloat. He is her caregiver, her provider, and her constant support—yet he cannot be in two places at once. The heartbreak of choosing between being at her side or earning the income they desperately need is something no spouse should ever face.
Together, Deanna and Nick share seven children and seven grandchildren, all of whom adore her. She has always been the heartbeat of the family — the one who shows up, the one who gives without hesitation, the one who quietly carries everyone else’s burdens. She’s an animal lover with a gentle soul, having cared for every creature from tiny rats to bright, proud cockatiels. And before her own illness, she lovingly walked both her parents, step mother and her mother and father-in-law through their final days, giving them comfort and compassion until their very last moments.
