Help de babies van Turiani Hospital!

Beste familie, vrienden, kennissen, geïnteresseerden,

Momenteel loop ik mijn laatste coschap in Turiani ziekenhuis in Tanzania. Dit is een district ziekenhuis waar maandelijks minimaal 125 babies worden geboren waarvan 10 babies prematuur (te vroeg geboren) zijn en behoefte hebben aan beademingsondersteuning middels een CPAP machine.

Deze week is er een prematuur kindje geboren, met een geboortegewicht van 1,2 kg. Aangezien hier geen CPAP machine beschikbaar is heeft een van de artsen hier een manier gevonden om met een fles water en enkele infuus systemen zelf een beademingsmachine te maken. Dit is echter een suboptimale situatie waarbij er een risico is dat de beademingsdrukken te hoog of juist te laag worden met catastrofale gevolgen voor de premature kinderen. Er is dus grote behoefte aan een adequaat CPAP machine.

Daarnaast worden er hier (net als in Nederland) veel kindjes geboren met een te hoog bilirubine waardoor zij icterisch worden (geel gaan zien). Dit ontstaat door een hoge afbraak van rode bloedcellen en treedt vaak op bij onder andere te vroeg geboren kindjes en infecties. Onbehandeld kan dit leiden tot onomkeerbare hersenschade.

Geel zien bij pasgeboren babies kan gelukkig goed worden behandeld door deze kindjes enkele dagen onder een speciale blauwe lamp te leggen (zogenoemde fototherapie). Op dit moment is deze lamp helaas niet in het ziekenhuis beschikbaar waardoor al deze kinderen moeten worden verwezen naar een ziekenhuis hier 2 uur vandaan. Zo’n verwijzing alleen al kost (zonder de fototherapie) al 190.000 Tanzaniaanse shillings wat neer komt op bijna €65. Voor veel kinderen is dit helaas veel te duur en is er dus helemaal geen behandeling beschikbaar.

Middels deze inzamelingsactie hoop ik genoeg geld bij elkaar te verzamelen om zowel een fototherapie lamp als een CPAP machine aan te kunnen schaffen. Dit zal een enorm verschil kunnen maken in de start van deze jonge kinderen.

Ieder klein bedrag in euro’s is al hier al heel veel Tanzaniaanse shillings waard!

Dear family, friends, acquaintances, and interested parties,

I am currently completing my final internship at Turiani Hospital in Tanzania. This is a district hospital where at least 125 babies are born each month, 10 of whom are premature and in need of respiratory support via a CPAP machine.

This week, a premature baby was born with a birth weight of 1.2 kg. Since there is no CPAP machine available here, one of the doctors has managed to create a makeshift ventilator using a bottle of water and some intravenous systems. However, this is a suboptimal situation with a risk of inappropriate ventilation pressures, which can have catastrophic consequences for premature infants. Therefore, there is a significant need for a proper CPAP machine.

Additionally, many babies here (just like in the Netherlands) are born with high bilirubin levels, causing jaundice. This results from the breakdown of red blood cells and often occurs in premature infants and those with infections. If untreated, it can lead to irreversible brain damage.

Fortunately, jaundice in newborns can be effectively treated by placing them under a special blue light (phototherapy) for a few days. Unfortunately, this lamp is not available at the hospital, so all these children have to be referred to a hospital 2 hours away. Such a referral alone (without the phototherapy) costs 190,000 Tanzanian Shillings, which is nearly €65. For many families, this is far too expensive, leaving no treatment available.

Through this fundraising campaign, I hope to gather enough money to purchase both a phototherapy lamp and a CPAP machine. This could make a tremendous difference in the lives of these young children.

Even a small amount in euros is worth a lot in Tanzanian Shillings!
