Help DC Students Get to New Orleans

I currently serve as the FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) adviser at Columbia Heights Education Campus, a renowned, multicultural Title 1 public high school in Washington, DC. The goal of our organization is to help students develop leadership skills and financial literacy. Our students are creative, critical thinkers who strive for social justice, even though many of them have experienced immense inequalities. Many of our students are immigrants who have to fight to learn a new language and succeed in a society that is not always welcoming. 100% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Despite these obstacles, our students have been incredibly successful in winning prestigious scholarships and attending top-tier universities. They are truly an inspiration.

Our local chapter of FBLA has been fortunate enough to attend several leadership conferences in the past due to federal Perkins funding. Unfortunately, we are no longer able to use Perkins funds for out of state conferences. Your donation will help us bring the 2017-2018 DC FBLA State Officers to the Fall Leadership Conference in New Orleans, where they will receive specialized officer training that will help our small chapter grow. The current officers have never attended a national conference. Participation in the conference will help them to develop leadership skills and gain valuable information about careers and colleges. Your donation will go toward the registration fee, flight, and hotel accomodations, which total close to $450 per student.

Having attended several FBLA conferences, I have seen firsthand how life-changing the speakers and workshops can be for students. Unfortunately, there is also a huge lack of diversity at these conferences, and if we are unable to secure funds, DC with have zero representatives in New Orleans. Your donation will help more students of color reap the benefits of FBLA, learn from business leaders, and develop the confidence necessary to be successful at work and school.
