Help Dayhanna’s Family Rebuild After Catastrophic Flooding

A few weeks ago, our beloved au pair, Dayhanna, received devastating news from back home in Bello, a suburb of Medellín, Colombia. Catastrophic flooding and landslides destroyed a large part of her neighborhood - entire blocks literally slid down the hillside. The structure and foundation of her family's house was damaged beyond repair — and sadly, the homes of her grandparents, uncle, and other close relatives, who were also her neighbors, suffered the same fate.

What makes this even more heartbreaking is that Dayhanna and her father spent five years building that home with their own hands. It wasn’t just a house—it was their dream, their safe haven, and a symbol of love, sacrifice, and perseverance. She lived there with her parents, her teenage brother, and their cats.

Dayhanna is not just someone who helps care for our kids—she is truly part of our family. She’s amazing with our boys, one of our closest friends, and simply a remarkable human being. Her presence in our home has brought us so much joy, love, and laughter. We honestly can’t imagine life without her.

Unfortunately, in Colombia, home insurance is rare or unavailable, and there’s little to no government support in the aftermath of disasters like this. Her family, like many others, is now left with no safety net—only the daunting task of starting from scratch.

When Dana and I visited her family in December, we were welcomed like family. Their warmth, humility, and generosity were unforgettable. They would do anything to help someone in need—and now, they are the ones who need help.
