Help Dawn Parker get her mobility back!

Donation protected
Hi – my name is Gary Parker and my mom, Dawn, suffered a spinal cord injury in 2016 that has left her unable to walk. For those who know her, she truly is an inspiration and has done a lot for many people.

**If you have trouble donating from South Africa, please feel free to donate using the bank account details at the bottom of this page**

Immediately following her injury, she was working hard to rehabilitate herself and was making good progress and it looked like living a relatively normal life was possible.

This was Dawn on her first day out of the rehab facility in late 2016

Due to a series of complications following her injury, her movement has been severely restricted. The screws in her spine dislodged and ripped out, causing additional damage to the nerves in her spine. She suffers from muscle spasms in her abdomen that make it almost impossible to sit up unassisted.  Her back muscles also go into spasm for hours every day. Her abdomen also distends significantly, making it very difficult for her to wheel herself unassisted in her wheelchair.  She is therefore largely restricted to lying in bed and sitting stationary in her wheelchair, making life very difficult.

Above is an x-ray showing the position of the metalwork in Dawn's back

She is unable to go out of the house in her wheelchair and is restricted to life inside the house. She is not able to spend time in the garden with her 3 granddaughters. She needs a powered wheelchair - something that we as a family are not able to afford at the moment due to extremely high medical care costs, which are obviously a priority.

We would love to buy her a locally made (South Africa) powered wheelchair that would give her much needed independence and enable her to spend time outdoors. I believe we can do something to improve the life of someone who has done so much for others by raising enough money to buy this wheelchair. For those of you who know her, you will know that she had a training institute that provided education to hundreds of less privileged individuals and equipped them to earn an income through their trade.

Will you help me, by donating what ever you can to buy this wheelchair? It doesn't matter how much you can donate as every bit will be that much closer for Dawn to get this wheelchair. The wheelchair costs R95 000 (roughly £5000). We will put whatever we raise towards buying the wheelchair. If there is a shortfall, we will try to raise that through alternative means and advise all donors on how the money will be used.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. We will provide a detailed report on how the funds were used.
