Our dear friends,
Anyone who knows Lauren and I will also know Bunthouen and his wife, Leang Heng. You might have been to Brother Bong Café, met them with us, or heard us talk about them. Or maybe you were one of the incredible people who, seven years ago, donated to help save their newborn baby’s life.
When Bunthouen’s little sister Davy was just seven years old, Bunthouen and Leang Heng took over her primary care. At the time, they were in the first year of their marriage and expecting their first child. To them, she is like a daughter. To their two little boys, Dibi and Diho, she is the best big sister in the world.
Then came the words no one ever wants to hear about a child: Davy has cancer.
Davy is 14 years old, vibrant, bright, and full of life. She has her whole future ahead of her, but now she is facing a fight no child should have to face. She has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer.
In many countries, thyroid cancer is highly treatable. Surgery is routine, recovery rates are high, and with the right medication, most people go on to live long, healthy lives. Sadly, here in Cambodia, that isn’t the reality. The medicine needed for her surgery and recovery simply isn’t available. Without access to proper treatment, even a cancer with a high success rate can become life-threatening.
The only way to save Davy’s life is to take her to Vietnam for surgery and follow-up care. Bunthoeun and leangheng are potentially facing medical bills of over $7,000 USD (around $11,000 AUD). But they are also facing the possibility of a bright, happy, healthy future for their vibrant girl.
Once before, we asked you to come together to save Bunthouen and Leang Heng’s son’s life, and you did, in a way we still think about every single day. Today he is happy, healthy, and adores his big sister Davy. And now, we are asking you once more to help us save a child we love.
They cannot afford this surgery, but when a child’s life is at risk, you act first and think later. Please act. Please come together.
Because how do you put a dollar value on a life? How do you say no to a child whose country’s medical system cannot help them?
You don’t. You do what you can to save them.
In a world where it might feel like you can’t make a difference, let me tell you, you can. You can make a difference for Davy.
If you don’t have the means to help, please share, maybe someone in your network does. And please, hug your babies a little tighter.
From our hearts to yours <3
please note: As this campaign is set to an Australian account all donations are transferred in Australian dollar not USD unfortunately. Please keep this in mind when making your kind donation <3
✨ Davy’s Update ✨
On Tuesday… Davy went into surgery. And it went well.
We are so thankful. One big step forward.
But the journey isn’t over.
On September 22nd, she will return to begin treatment.
The treatment is radioactive iodine, around $1,200usd per round.
She will need two rounds.
In the past few weeks alone, Buuntheoun and Davy have already made the grueling 12-hour bus ride… four times. Back and forth. Each trip, exhausting but necessary.
And while we’ve come so far together, we are still $6,000 short of the goal.
Every share matters.
Every donation brings Davy closer.
Every word of encouragement helps carry their family through.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. For holding her in your thoughts. For standing beside her in this fight. For stepping up and shower her she is not alone.
