Last Friday night, my car was stolen from outside my apartment building after it had already been broken into twice before. Inside the vehicle were several essential items my family depends on: a brand-new tire, a jack lift, my children’s clothes and stroller, two car seats, my prescription glasses, personal documents, and my security card and keys to my storage unit.

Because my card keys were taken with the car, I can no longer access my storage unit. As a single mother raising two children, this has created an incredibly difficult situation for our family.

Unfortunately, I could only afford limited tort insurance coverage, which means I am still responsible for paying my monthly car note even though my car has been stolen.

Losing our vehicle has taken away our only safe reliable transportation. Right now, my children are missing tutoring sessions and after-school activities because we have no safe way to get there. Many of the places we need to go are too far to walk, and after 7 p.m., it is not safe for me to travel through the city with two small children using public transportation.

My priority has always been keeping my children safe while making sure they have every opportunity to learn and grow. I am asking for help from my community to raise funds toward purchasing a reliable used vehicle so I can get my children back to school, tutoring, and their activities. Any remaining funds will go toward paying off the balance on my stolen car, which I am still legally responsible for due to my insurance coverage.
