Help David with Bar Exam & Moving Expenses

This July I will sit for the California Bar Exam. California’s bar exam is considered by many to be the toughest bar exam in the country. Of those that took last February’s administration of the exam, only 34 percent received a passing score. To be successful on the exam, I must dedicate my entire self to preparing for it. Doing so, however, will not be easy.  This summer, while I prepare for the exam, I will need pay rent, job search, and find a new place to live. Back in April, my landlord unexpectedly informed me that my lease will not be renewed and that I will need to be out of my current place by the end of July, right after I take the bar exam. Seldomly are the struggles that many law graduates face while preparing for the bar exam talked about. Especially those of us that come from underrepresented communities.Law graduates are largely left to themselves to secure funds for housing, groceries, utilities, and other expenses while preparing for the bar exam. We must do so while committing to 35-40 hours a week of studying for the exam. This effectively makes working while studying for the exam impossible. However, bills and rent must still be paid.  Having a law degree does not guarantee employment. Many firms and legal offices require that applicants already have passed the bar exam and have a few years of experience to be considered for employment. Currently, my legal experience is limited to internships, externships, and client work I have performed for legal clinics. However, I will still need to apply for and possibly interview for positions, while studying for the bar exam. The funds that I receive from my GoFundMe will primarily go towards rent while preparing for the bar exam and while I’m job searching afterwards. The rest will be used for groceries and utilities. My law school journey has been one that was full of obstacles. On top of housing, I have dealt with issues tied to my mental and physical health. I suffer from an autoimmune disease called Ulcerative Colitis.  The legal profession needs to be diversified. The funds that I receive will in the short term help me to become the first attorney in my family, and in the long term to bring about more Black representation in the legal field. I want thank all that contribute to my GoFundMe in advance .
