David is a delightful young man aged 21. He is an identical twin who had the misfortune to contract a severe infection when he was one week old.The infection crossed to his brain where it caused devastating damage resulting in cerebral palsy and severe dystonia. This means that David has almost no control of his body, he cannot walk or talk, but he has full cognition. His tight muscles require daily physiotherapy and he has needed major surgery to help release them and a brain implant to help reduce the very painful spasms he suffers from. He has faced his countless challenges with bravery and determination and an entirely wicked sense of humour.
David attends college where he was included in the trial on an Innowalk device pro ((Click Here to check it out!) . The Innowalk Pro is an exercise machine rather like a cross-trainer, specially designed for people with physical disabilities, and he reacted incredibly well to using the device. The benefits using the machine can have for David are huge, building and strengthening his muscles, easing stiffness and lessening the restrictions on his organs which are compromised by his being in a wheelchair all day. It also helps reduce the discomfort he experiences from muscle spasms. In addition, there is the enormous psychological benefit to being upright and able to move his body. Since the trial, David’s physiotherapist has recommended that the Innowalk would be of great benefit to David.
The Innowalk would make a huge difference to David’s quality of life and could even extend it by allowing him to have the healthy exercise that many people take for granted. It is is very expensive, about £25,000, and not funded by the NHS, so we would be immensely grateful for any help in our fundraising to purchase one.
