Imagine a peaceful summer afternoon shattered by the unthinkable. My brother was taking his usual walk - something he can't do anymore - when he noticed a little girl's innocent smile and wave at the splash pad. That simple moment of joy would soon drive him to make an extraordinary choice.
Minutes later, after being confronted and shot by an armed attacker in the park restroom, David faced a heart-wrenching decision. He could run to safety - his car was right there - but he knew that mother and her precious 8-year-old daughter were still in harm's way, completely unaware of the danger lurking nearby.
"That little girl's smile... I couldn't let anything happen to her," David told me from his hospital bed, his voice breaking with tear-filled eyes.
