This year has brought more challenges than I ever expected. After suffering a shoulder cuff tear and now dealing with a bulging disc, I’ve found myself unable to work the odd jobs I relied on to make ends meet. Losing my job and moving in with my elderly father, who is on a fixed income, has made things even tougher. On top of my own medical recovery, I’m trying to help my dad with high electric bills and property taxes, but I’ve run out of resources and can’t contribute as much as I should.

The timing couldn’t be harder, as my 17-year-old son is visiting for Christmas break. He lives 1,100 miles away in Texas, and I want to make the most of the little time we have together. I’ve applied to several jobs and am determined to recover, but healing takes time and opportunities are limited with my injuries. I don’t want to be a charity case—I just want to give my son a decent experience and help my father with the bills that keep piling up.
