David Derin Barreto Martins is a 12-year-old pianist and composer from Istanbul, Turkey, born to Turkish and Portuguese heritage. He first touched a piano at the age of four — and from that moment, music became the compass of his life.

Today, David is a full-time student at the State Conservatory of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, one of Turkey's most prestigious music institutions, studying under Professor Burcu Aktaş Urgun. His formal training began at the age of five, progressing through junior programs at Istanbul University and Mimar Sinan before earning his place in the full-time conservatory program in 2023.

What sets David apart is not just his technical ability, but his musicality and emotional depth at such a young age. He has worked with faculty from the Mozarteum University (Prof. Jingge Yan), the University of Music Saar (Prof. Fedele Antonicelli), and the Bern Conservatory (Prof. Fernando Viani) — proof that the international music world is already paying close attention.

David is also a composer. In 2020, he was the youngest contestant in Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's Children's Composers Competition, receiving the Jury Special Award. The following year he was selected for the Children's Composers Meeting composition training programme.

A MOTHER, A SON, AND AN UNSHAKEABLE BELIEF

David is being raised by his mother, Gizem, who is a single parent solely responsible for every aspect of his upbringing and education. From the very first piano lesson to the conservatory entrance exams, from competition registrations to international travel — Gizem has been there for every step, carrying both the emotional and financial weight of nurturing a gifted child on her own.

Raising a conservatory student as a single mother in today's Turkey is not a small feat. The exchange rate between the Turkish Lira and the Euro means that international opportunities — flights, accommodation, competition fees, tuition — carry a cost that is disproportionately heavy for a family on a single income. Gizem has never let that stand in David's way. But this summer, with two major European events falling within the same month, she simply cannot do it alone.

This campaign is not about luxury. It is about making sure that a mother's sacrifice and a child's years of hard work are not undone by financial circumstances beyond their control.

David has been personally selected by Prof. Andreas Weber as an active participant — performing and receiving instruction at one of the world's most storied music institutions, in the very city where Mozart was born.

Missing either of these due to financial constraints would be a genuine loss — not just for David, but for Turkey's representation in the international music community.

Bugün David, Türkiye'nin en prestijli müzik kurumlarından biri olan Mimar Sinan Güzel Sanatlar Üniversitesi Devlet Konservatuvarı Tam Zamanlı Piyano Programı'nda Prof. Burcu Aktaş Urgun'un öğrencisi olarak eğitimini sürdürmektedir. Beş yaşında başlayan resmi müzik eğitimi, İstanbul Üniversitesi ve MSGSÜ hazırlık programlarını kapsayarak 2023 yılında tam zamanlı konservatuvar programına kabulüyle taçlandı.

David'i özel kılan yalnızca teknik yetkinliği değil, yaşının çok ötesindeki müzikal olgunluğu ve sahne duruşudur. BİR ANNE, BİR OĞUL VE SARSILMAZ BİR İNANÇ

David, annesi Gizem tarafından tek başına büyütülmektedir. Gizem, hem David'in yetiştirilmesinden hem de tüm eğitim masraflarından yalnız başına sorumludur. İlk piyano dersinden konservatuvar sınavlarına, yarışma başvurularından uluslararası seyahatlere — her adımda hem duygusal hem de maddi yükü tek başına taşımıştır.

Türkiye'nin bugünkü ekonomik koşullarında tek ebeveyn olarak bir konservatuvar öğrencisi yetiştirmek küçük bir başarı değildir. TL/Euro kuru, uçak bileti, konaklama, yarışma ücretleri ve eğitim masrafları gibi uluslararası fırsatları tek gelirli bir aile için orantısız biçimde ağır kılıyor. Gizem, bugüne kadar hiçbir engelin David'in önüne geçmesine izin vermedi. Ancak bu yaz, aynı ay içinde gerçekleşecek iki büyük Avrupa etkinliğiyle birlikte bu yükü artık tek başına kaldırması mümkün değil.
