On the evening of October 4, 2025, my father, David, was photographing a concert, as he has done hundreds of time in his 40+ year career. This time; however, he went to move out of another photographer's way, and he slipped and fell. On impact, he hit his head on a concrete barricade. He sustained damage to his spinal cord and loss of movement of his hands and legs. He was then life-flighted from Ocean City, Maryland (where the concert was held) to a trauma unit in Baltimore, Maryland where they performed emergency spinal cord surgery the next morning.
Since then, my father has undergone spinal cord surgery, and, as a result of the fall, currently has loss the use of his hands and legs. He has received some physical therapy there, but his hands and legs are still not functional. While doctors are hopeful he will eventually regain 80-90% of his previous mobility, he has a long road of physical therapy ahead of him.
For him to receive the best care he can, he will be transferred from Baltimore, Maryland to either Parkersburg or Morgantown, West Virginia. These are the best two facilities for rehabilitation in his home state. Doctors and nurses have stressed the importance of our family being there physically during this time. My dad has also stated this would be a tremendous weight off his chest to have us there. At this time, for example, he cannot do things like scratch his head or wipe his nose, and by having us there, we can assist with this without him having to call the already busy and understaffed nurses to help.
In anticipation of his move to a WV based hospital, I am creating this GoFundMe to help assist with the costs of transportation to and from and temporary housing near the rehabilitation center.
