Help David Moreland & Family

Dave Moreland is a man of heart. Over the years, he's been the first friend on your doorstep to help with a move, offer assistance to fix your car, build your deck, or fix your plumbing. A man of many talents and knowledge, he loves to help.

 

In August of 2021, Dave noticed something was wrong. It began with a pinched nerve sensation and pain in his upper left shoulder, and slowly progressed to paralysis in his fingers and hands. After months of increasing pain and loss of mobility, Dave sought treatment through physio and his GP. His condition has progressively worsened.

 

He is currently unable to:

*  stand for any duration of time

*  raise his arms past chest level

*  lift or grasp anything more than 1lb

*  has no mobility in his neck or shoulders
*  is unable to lie down

*  is experiencing nerve pain and paralysis in fingers on both hands, as it's increasingly moving further up his arms

 

Finally he received a referral to the Ottawa Civic Neurological and Spinal team, where he was given an estimated consult date to review his file in 2023 with no date on surgery or treatment.

 

Realizing that waiting for more than 2 years would be very painful and concerned that the risk for permanent damage was significant, Dave reached out to German medical professionals. The German surgical team has deemed that Dave's case is URGENT. To prevent further permanent compression of the nerve structures which could result in irreversible neurological deficits. The goal of the surgery is drastic pain alleviation and thus increasing a significantly more normal and active lifestyle. They decided that his surgery should be sooner rather than later and have scheduled the surgery right away for early in December.

 

Dave will fly to Dusseldorf, Germany and remain at Elisabeth Hospital Recklinghaus for 7 days. He will then take part in rehab for 8 days post surgery, where the goal is that he can return home with normal range of motion, alleviate pain, and begin strength and muscle physio to return to an active life.

Dave is looking forward to returning to being an active individual in his community, enjoying his employment and to continue helping friends and family.

 

Most of all, he can't wait to tuck his daughters into bed each night, and hug them with both arms ❤️

 

Fundraising Goals:

Our goal with fundraising is to contribute to the cost of the surgery and rehabilitation for Dave in Germany, where they will perform the surgery early next month. (December 2021)

 

Diagnosis:

Degenerative disc disease (DDD) (dehydrated disc, loss of disc height) with herniations causing spinal cord and left foraminal stenosis at C4/5, C5/6, C6/7.

 

Surgical Treatment Plan:

Total discectomy by anterior surgical approach and disc replacement C4/5, C5/6, C6/7.
