On Tuesday, July 28th at a little before 9am...on his first day back to work after a mini-stay-cation, my husband, David Drake Jr., sent me these photos and called me with a fear in his voice that I'd never heard. He was in excruciating pain. The batteries in his pocket had ignited, severely burning his right leg and hand.
When I arrived in Carthage, NY, the ambulance crew showed me his burns and told me he needed to be airlifted to Syracuse, NY to the trauma burn center immediately. He had suffered 1st, 2nd & 3rd degree burns. They moved quickly and met the helicopter in Boonville, NY, and landed at Upstate Medical in Syracuse.
During the transport, he went into AFib (Atrial fibrillation). He has no real memory of what that was like. They called me to ask what heart meds he takes...what?...why? I explained he'd never had an issue before.
He spent 12 days in the hospital, 5 in ICU and underwent two surgeries. The first surgery was an Allograft, a temporary covering using donated skin to cover the cleaned wound, and the second surgery, an Autograft, where they harvested his own skin from the front of the same leg to cover the wound.
We are beyond grateful for the multiple talented and blessed hands that have been with David every step of this, sometimes terrifying, journey, as well as the prayers and well wishes from church, family, friends and the community.
On day 12, he was released to come home. Avoiding infection is our #1 priority and he's healing a little more each day.
These funds are a true necessity to pay the astronomical medical bills not covered by insurance, and to cover the loss of income and keep the roof over our heads.
