4/7/26 Update:
Thank You ❤️
We are so grateful for the support Dave has received so far. Because of your kindness, we’ve already begun making real progress toward getting him home.
We’ve added a short video of Dave saying thank you himself — this truly means the world to him.
We’re not there yet, but we’re closer because of you.
Thank you for being part of this.
Thank you for being part of this.
Original Post:
For the past two years, if you’ve driven past our corner in Albuquerque, you may have seen Dave. Trixie and I have become friends with him, we pass by him daily. He’s a nice guy. Articulate, sharp, clever and friendly. He is 72 years old.
He is a U.S. military veteran who served from 1971 to 1999. After retiring, Dave worked as a truck driver until 2017, when he became disabled. Despite everything life has thrown at him, he has kept moving forward.
Two years ago, Dave and five family members were traveling from California back home to Queens, New York when their RV broke down in Albuquerque. That breakdown stranded them here. Since then, Dave has been trying to survive while figuring out how to get his family home.
Dave is facing overwhelming health challenges:
Kidney failure and waiting for a transplant
COPD
Cancer in his right lung (his only functioning lung), thankfully in remission for the past year
Despite his service to this country, the VA will not provide assistance for his family’s situation, leaving them stuck far from home and without the resources to get back.
For two years Dave has been begging on this same corner every day, doing what he can for his and his family’s survival. They are currently camping near the bosque.
Dave’s biggest worry is that he is going to die before getting him and his family home to New York. His kidney situation is severe, he is receiving care from the Albuquerque VA and can also receive care from the VA hospital in New York.
He isn't home, and he wants to be.
Despite daily hustling the corner near our house, he hasn't been able to scrape enough together to get him and his family out of Albuquerque.
After two years of his friendship and hearing his experience, we feel like a community GoFundMe could be the means to help him out. If you have given a few bucks to a homeless person before would you please consider donating $5 or $10 or whatever feels right to help out Dave. It's a long shot and may not hit the goal and work out, but trying something to help him out is better than just passing him day after day, sometimes with food and a few bucks or even just a bottle of water. His situation could be any of ours.
We’re hoping to raise funds to help get Dave and his family back home to Queens, where they have connections, familiarity, and a better chance at stability and support.
Your donation will help cover:
Travel expenses to New York
Transportation logistics
Immediate necessities to help Dave and his family transition safely
Whether or not its in your stars to help out, please share this to your friends. We need a lot of exposure and reach to hit this goal.
Thank you for reading, for caring and for being an awesome person.
