Help Dave Dance Again!!

Donation protected

One word that comes to mind when I think of my dad; Dave Devine, is resilient. The man is a warrior who refuses to give up. With that being said, the past two years have been extremely difficult for him. My father has a heart of gold, and would give a complete stranger the shirt off his back, and for a cute girl, probably his pants too.

But, for some darn reason he keeps getting the short end of the stick. Last year his SUV that he absolutely loved was hit by an eighteen wheeler. Unfortunately, the SUV lost. His car flipped multiple times on the highway and his only vehicle was completely totaled. You think that would get most people down and out, but not my dad. His ability to find the silver lining in the most darkest times truly amazes me. My dad was an athlete his whole life (still thinks he has it). After decades participating in competitive sports and from owning a restaurant, his knee finally gave out on him. It was more than apparent that the combination of strenuous activities resulted in the Dr. saying he needed a knee replacement. My dad did not like this idea because he knew he’d be pretty much immobile for months. If you know anything about my dad, you know that he’s a mover and a shaker. Total life of the party type. Him laying on a bed for months is his worst nightmare, but he knew that he could never live the life he wanted again if he didn’t get the surgery. So in 2020, smack in the middle of the pandemic, he got his knee replaced. He made sure to go the extra mile in his excercises and physical therapy appointments. It amazed me how quickly he got back to his old self. He missed working. Welll he missed the people he got to communicate with while at work. So at 64 years old he went back to work at Carrabas. He has had long time customers there for years and he missed them. He had to settle for an early 2000 town car, but that didn’t matter. He was at work every morning with a smile on his face and a story or 20 to tell, followed by his ever famous same recycled corny jokes.

My dad finally seemed like he was back to his old self. He was happy. A couple weeks ago he wanted to hang lights around the back porch for his famous summer get togethers. He’s been looking forward to this summer literally since before COVID hit. It didn’t matter that it was getting dark out. Summer is here and the lights needed hung! Well while up on the ladder he slipped and fell. Near the base of the ladder was a bench press with a couple weights on it and also some dumb bells. He knew he couldn’t afford to fall on his newly replaced knee, so on the way down he turned his body and fell directly on his hip/tailbone. Falling directly on the weights.

If you know my dad then you know how big he is. That’s a big package falling on some weights. He was in terrible pain. It took almost 3 days for us to convince him to go to the hospital. They took an X-ray and our worst fears were confirmed.... he had a clear break. There is a socket type bone between the hip and the tailbone, and that’s what he broke. That news crushed my dad. He was decimated to a level I’ve never seen my dad. To make it worse, he had to cancel a long awaited trip to California that was only a couple days away. His best friends, friends that he grew up with live in California as well as most of our family. So any time he gets the chance to fly out there, it’s a HUGE deal. His nephew is also getting married in August in California. This wedding has been postponed literally 3 times due to COVID. He has been full of excitement and all he’s been doing is non stop planning and I get paid talking about for months is this wedding in California. One of the first things my dad said when he got out of surgery is “I guess I won’t be able to dance at Devins wedding.” Well that’s not necessarily true, because he is already on his sprint towards recovery. He WILL DANCE at that wedding next month in California. With all these tragedies that this poor man has endured the past couple years he has been barely been able to work at all, and now he’s out of commission for a couple of months. My dad HATES asking for help, but with mortgage bills, utility bills, and medical bills piling high he’s starting to experience severe anxiety due to financial insecurity. I told him about go fund me multiple times before and he always shut down the idea immediately, but he finally agreed to set his pride aside and ask for help. I told him asking for help is actually an example of showing strength. He said “Ya that actually makes a lot of sense Britt!” I told him I would type this for him, but he wanted to make sure whoever reads this to know that if you can’t afford to donate during this hard time that’s completely OK! He said he will gladly take prayers as well. My dad has spent 65 years giving to others. Putting others needs ahead of his. I think it’s time that we unite and give back to Dave for once. If anyone deserves a little help, it’s this man. Any amount helps. Please know how grateful he is for all of you guys! He vows to come back better than ever. Let’s help Dave dance again!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
