Hello dear friends, family, and colleagues.
I never thought we'd be here, never imagined a day when I would need such help, but here we are. On August 1st our lives changed forever, my beautiful husband Dave was diagnosed with a brain tumour, nothing prepares you for those words and our world began to fall apart. Just two weeks later Dave underwent 7 hours of life saving brain surgery to try and remove as much as was safely possible. Unfortunately due to the complex location of the tumour they were only able to remove around 50 percent. A couple of weeks later we received the extra devastating news that it is a glioblastoma, the most aggressive form of brain cancer with no known cure. The tumour is also unmethylated which means it won't respond to the only chemotherapy currently available for this type of cancer.
Dave has just finished 6 weeks of daily radiotherapy at the Clatterbridge in Liverpool, I don’t know how we’ve done it, hundreds of miles driven, hours of waiting, juggling treatment and family life. The Priceless kindness of friends and family helping with meals, lifts, picking up the kids, running errands, shoulders to cry on, checking in, closeness and also sometimes needed space.
There really are no words to express our gratitude.
It hasn’t been easy, I won’t lie, there have been seizures, overnight stays in hospital, urgent extra scans, side effects, hair loss, difficulty walking, sleepless nights and utter despair.
But together we have just kept going, hopeful, optimistic, determined and commmited to do whatever is necessary to support Dave’s healing no matter what the doctors say, and what the odds may be. We have been given a small lifeline of a medical trial where he's receiving a new drug which will hopefully slow down the cancer's growth until something better can be found.
Dave has been incredible throughout everything, he shows such courage and determination, every day he tries to get the movement back in his hand and improve his walking even when he's so exhausted. He is an amazing husband and simply the best Dad to Erin and Gabriel, he really is the light of our lives, you could never meet anyone more kind, caring, funny and loving. Dave has always prided himself on working hard and providing for his family, he is the glue that holds us all together, and I know how terribly hard it is for him to not be able to work and support us like he always has. But now it's up to us to support him, and I desperately need your help.
The current NHS treatment for Glioblastoma hasn't changed in twenty years and if we are to save Dave's life we will have to access treatment currently not available in the UK.
Any support you can offer will open doors to life-extending options here in the UK and possibly abroad. And buy us more time.
We know it’s hard for everyone at the moment. Believe us when we say that we’re only asking for this help from anyone in a position to do so. We know that isn’t everyone and no matter how close you are to us we will not feel offended if this isn’t the help you can offer.
Thank you for reading, and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for any help you can give — whether through donations, sharing our story, or simply keeping us in your thoughts.
With our love,
Lindsay, Dave, Erin and Gabriel.
