Help Darrell and Obi-Wan Start Anew in Canada

My name is Darrell James. Some of you know me as a professional stage actor, others as a college professor, a storyteller, a dog dad, or just that guy who always had a smart mouth and a big heart. I spent over 35 years on stage, in classrooms, and at the intersection of language, performance, and passion. I had the joy of teaching at Vassar College and working with students from all over the world. My life was full—until it wasn’t.
In 2013, I was in a serious car accident. While recovering, I was hit again in 2016—this time much worse. My back was broken in 11 places, along with my hip, thigh, sternum, pelvis, and ribs. I now live with chronic pain, permanent mobility limitations, and a service dog named Obi-Wan, who quite literally helps keep me standing.
Because I’m immunocompromised, navigating the American healthcare system has been a waking nightmare. I lost my teaching job. My marriage ended. I moved back to Billings, Montana, to start over—with the help of family and friends.
Since then, I’ve done everything I can to keep going. I’m nearly certified to teach English as a foreign language. I’ve built a peaceful home. I’ve been patient. But with the recent passage of legislation that will gut disability benefits and remove my remaining healthcare and food assistance, I’m now at a crossroads.
Here’s the good news: I’ve been accepted into Canada’s highest level of skilled worker immigration. I’ll be allowed to live, work, teach, and access healthcare immediately. I’ll be eligible for dual citizenship. It’s the new beginning I’ve been working toward for years—and it’s finally here.
Here’s the hard part: I need help to make it across the border.
I’m trying to raise $15,000 to cover:
- $1,500 in legal and processing fees
- $2,000 for a rental deposit and first month’s rent
- $2,000 to help with basic furnishings and setup
- $800 to ensure Obi-Wan and her sister Janey are travel-ready and fully documented
- $2,700 for a U-Haul and vehicle tow
- The rest for contingencies, startup costs, and to make sure I land on my feet
I don’t take this ask lightly. I’ve worked my whole life, and I’ve always tried to give more than I take. But right now, I need help. Whether you’re a friend from the theater, a former student, a neighbor, or someone who just believes in second (and third) chances—your kindness would mean the world.
Even $5 helps. Sharing helps. Every dollar brings me closer to safety, health, and hope.
Thank you for reading, for caring, and for believing in me. Obi-Wan, Janey and I are ready for our next chapter—we just need a little help turning the page.
With gratitude,
Darrell James
