Darion Labrie Fought for His Life
Hello, my name is Angela Labrie and I am starting this fundraiser for my son, Darion, 23, who was in a horrible motorcycle accident. This is his story.
Darion's accident happened on the night of Saturday, July 31, 2021. He ended his shift at the Rusty Lantern Market in Lee, NH at 8:30 PM. He got on his bike and headed to meet friends for a little ride after work while it was nice out as we had two weeks of rain prior. Not a minute from work, a 2018 Audi pulled out in front of him as it left a nearby fast food restaurant. It is heartbreaking for me to think that something so random and tragic can happen without a moment's notice. Life is fragile and we cannot take any of it for granted. Always tell those you know that you love them. They can never know it enough.
After we received the call about his accident, we rushed to Portsmouth Regional Hospital after around 10:30 PM. At 2:00 AM, Sunday morning, he was transported to Mass General. Portsmouth Regional did not have the capacity to deal with his head trauma. They have him in a medically induced coma so his brain can rest. There is a brain bleed and a lot of damage to the left frontal lobe. His face is broken; skin and bones. He did have a helmet on but for some reason it came off. He has a long road to recovery and I will not entertain anything else. My only son was in a fight for his life and I am not going to leave his side.
Update from Sunday, August 1. 2021: They put a bolt in Darion's head, an intracranial pressure monitor. It will measure the pressure on his brain. They need him to stabilize to operate on his right forearm and wrist. They need to perform an Open Reduction/Internal Fixation surgery. He also has four left fractured ribs and one right fractured rib. His face is broken in four places and he will have it wired and hardware fixed as well. They still have to wait for him to be stable to operate. His face is split open from bottom lip to nose. They have stitched that up since.
His brain still has 2 bleeds and they are uncertain of the damage to his left frontal lobe. It’s a traumatic brain injury so we don’t know at this point if he will have effects from that. It’s too early. In addition, he has pulmonary contusions (swelling) on his lungs and he is on a ventilator. The next 72 hours are vital. Good news is that his ankles were not broken as they originally told us.
Update from Monday, August 2, 2021: There were no changes in his status. The doctors have told me that is not necessarily a bad thing. His eye pressure was good and his pupils responsive although he is still in a coma. He will be able to have an MRI once the intracranial pressure monitor comes out. They want to do a clinical study on him with neurotechnology which study’s patterns in the brain and how it responds to noises. Even though he can’t communicate with us, it will tell us if he can actually hear us and if his brain is responding to outside sounds/voices/noise/music. They have been doing this study since 2018 on about 48 people so far and in some cases people with a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) would respond. We are hopeful.
Darion is our only son. He means the world to me and my husband. We are asking for help from friends and family because we know his medical and recovery costs will be very high. We know he has the fight in him to get through this, no matter how long it takes. We will be by his side through all of it and I know that many of you want to help. That is why we started this campaign.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
