Help Darien's Mom Recover from Severe Accident

My mom needs help.

My name is Darien (some of you may know me as Rati).

On Saturday, April 12th, my mother Michelle (Maha Mohini) and stepfather (Mike) were driving to a Rathayatra festival in St. Augustine, Fl., when a car decided to turn into oncoming traffic and crashed directly into their vehicle.

This caused a minimum 5-car pile-up. 3 cars were impounded from the scene - it was that bad.

My mother had to be pulled out of the car by a good samaritan, as the car was completely totaled, her body was in shock, and her hand had separated from her wrist.

She was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. After multiple scans, they found contusions on her collarbone, and her wrist was shattered beyond recognition.

The surgeon said her bones had “turned to dust.”

He had to do "five times" what he normally would in a surgery like this.

Metal plates. Screws. Bone scraping. Muscle reconstruction.

He told us this was the worst break he’s ever operated on in his entire career.

She’s now facing a year of recovery. The first 8 weeks on complete bed rest. No movement at all. After that, maybe, slow turning motions at the 6-month mark.

To make matters worse: while running tests from the accident, doctors also found a lesion on her liver. We don’t know what it is yet. But she will need further testing and a biopsy as soon as she's able.

As if this wasn't enough - most of what she needs is not covered by insurance. We are paying out of pocket until the potential of a settlement or insurance payout - both of which have an indefinite timeline and are not guaranteed.

My mom had three jobs. She just quit all of them.

She will be out of work for at least a year.

Not even her pain medication is covered by insurance. It's $400 a bottle.
