In August, my daughter's home was damaged during Hurricane Henri. Henri was not a "declared" disaster, so she and her husband do not qualify for **any** government aid.
Her town's mayor requested that Henri and Ida be considered one storm so the town's residents would benefit from relief funds, but the request was denied. The governor visited her home a few days after the storm, but repeated attempts to contact him have been ignored.
The damage to their house was significant enough to be torn down and rebuilt, which flood insurance isn't covering - they determined the structural damage was caused by poor construction (around 1907!!!) and 'normal' deterioration over time. Tearing down and rebuilding is a lengthy, expensive process. It's now seven months after the flood, and no tangible progress has been made on anything, as there are surveys and permits and variances and all kinds of paperwork (and fees!) needed.
My daughter, son-in-law, and their two dogs are living with me because they still need to pay the mortgage on the house they can no longer live in, and they did not qualify for FEMA 'displacement' aid. So they're struggling to save money while they're here, as they're still paying for a lot of bills they've always had, plus giving me money towards utilities (even though I keep telling them not to!).
Some extended family members have been in touch recently, asking if they can send money to help, and a GoFundMe was suggested as it's easily accessible to everyone. So here we are... All funds donated will go directly to Darcie and Mic for expenses related to the tear-down of their home, toward fees due to their town for the paperwork needed, and toward the building/furnishing of a new home(whenever that happens). Any/all help is greatly appreciated!
