This funny lookin’ fella here is Danny Riley - my fun, generous, caring, and shockingly resilient younger brother. He has battled Lyme disease for what we now estimate to be at least 25 years. He has always gone out of his way to put a good face forward, appearing healthy. He is so selfless that he never wanted it to affect those around him. Knowing now the litany of painful and mysterious symptoms he has dealt with for so many years, his life approach is extremely impressive!
Danny boy has lived his entire adult life with this nasty disease. Just over a year ago he was finally diagnosed with Lyme. This was after two decades of being told he was “crazy” or “just being dramatic” by everyone, including doctors.
He has been forced to cut back or quit most of the things he loves doing. He is an avid and excellent surfer, but recently had to stop because of the overwhelming effects of his ailments. Other hobbies such as gold mining, fishing, and camping have also become casualties of Lyme. Additionally, last fall he was forced to quit his job helping and mentoring people with disabilities in Crescent City, CA. He then moved home in an attempt to focus on getting healed. Despite various treatments and extreme dietary restrictions, no improvement was noticed.
Here are some of the symptoms he deals with on a daily basis:
-On a good day, a bad headache, but normally a full blown migraine. All day, every day, for 25 years.
-Joint, muscle and bone pain
-Eye pain and decreased vision
-Heavy flu-like symptoms
-Heart problems
-Involuntary muscle and weight loss (over 40 lbs. in 2 years)
-Depression/anxiety
-Suppressed immune and digestive systems
-Brain fog and confusion
-Memory loss and cognitive decline
-Rashes and infections
-Extreme fatigue
-Nausea
-Vertigo
-Dizziness
After trying nearly every recommended treatment in the US, our mother, Terri discovered a Lyme treatment facility in Germany. This clinic has proven to be very successful in treating and often curing Lyme! He arrived there one month ago. The initial 12 weeks of treatment has begun, but because he has had it for so long and wasn't diagnosed until recently, it is likely he will need to stay an additional 12 weeks.
