Hi, this is Danny and Nick Shin, and we are reaching out with a heavy but hopeful heart.
For those who know us, you may know we typically don't share personal struggles or ask for help. But right now, our family is going through something incredibly hard, and we've realized that sometimes, you just have to reach out.
Last week, we received the most devastating news a son could ever hear—our mother has been silently battling Stage 2A Esophageal Cancer since November 2024. As any selfless mother would, she chose not to tell my brother and me sooner because she didn’t want to burden us with worry. Instead, she fought in silence, enduring multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation therapy on her own.
Now, her treatment is taking a more serious turn. She is scheduled to undergo a major surgery next month, an Esophagectomy, to have her esophagus removed. This is a super intense procedure that will require a long and difficult recovery. Along with more radiation therapy after surgery.
Our mom is an immigrant who came to the US in 1990 with one dream: to give her children a better life. Despite both of our parents working jobs that paid close to minimum wage, they sacrificed everything to make sure both their sons could go to college—something they never had the chance to do.
Our parents live in Virginia, far from us, with only our dad by her side. He has already taken significant time off work to care for her, and while he continues to be there as support, the financial burden is becoming overwhelming.
We've created this GoFundMe to help cover her medical expenses, surgery costs, and support during her recovery. We just want her to be able to focus on healing and not on how they’ll afford it all.
If you’re able to contribute—even the smallest amount—it would mean the world to us.
Thank you for reading our story.
With love and gratitude,
Danny and Nick
