Help Daniel with stroke recovery

Hello everyone. My name is Bethany “Boo” McCullar. I am writing to you in hopes of raising funds for my Mom and Papa; Carmel and Daniel Buzek. On Monday January 11, 2021 at 3:30 am, my papa Daniel Buzek was not feeling great, his arm was numb and hurting, but was going to try to go to work. My mom, Carmel asked Daniel if he was ok. He said he would be fine. But within a matter of minutes Daniel collapsed. He was conscious, but was not able to verbally communicate or able to get up. My mom called 911 and when EMS arrived they said they believe he had a major stroke and needed immediate medical treatment for this. Life flight was called to transport Daniel to the Houston Medical Center. Daniel was life flighted to Memorial Hermann located in the downtown Houston Medical Center. When he arrived the doctors assessed his condition, did MRI and CT Scan. Daniel had emergency surgery shortly after he arrived at the hospital. The surgery is “Carotid angioplasty and stenting (CAS)” on the left side of his neck. He had a left-brain ischemic stroke which paralyzed the right side of his body, and rendered him unable to communicate or swallow. It has been one week and Daniel is not able to communicate, swallow, or move the right side of his body still. He has a little movement with his left leg, hand, shoulder and he has a feeding tube to provide necessary nutrition. Currently due to covid no one is able to be at the hospital with Daniel and we talk to him by video chat set up thru the hospital. We are pretty sure he hears us when we do the video chats. Sometimes he looks at us or we believe he is. Daniel has been moved from ICU to the stroke unit at the hospital. He is receiving therapy to help him. He has had some mini strokes on the other side of his brain and these are being treated with medication. The stent that was placed did not work, the left artery in his neck became almost 90% blocked again and the right artery is 70% blocked. They are not able to do any more surgery right now due to the many complications that could set him back more. He is at a very high risk for another major stroke. The doctor is hoping that Daniel can be moved to a facility soon to begin more therapy treatment. They are working on assistance thru Medicare to help with the therapy. If approved this will only be for 3 weeks at the facility. During this time the therapists will be training myself and my mom on what we will need to do for Daniel through his recovery. This is going to be a long road to recovery for Daniel. We are praying for a full recovery and trying to be as positive as we can however we do know the reality side of his condition. When one suffers multiple major strokes like this, the brain is deprived from blood and oxygen too long and the damage may not be reversible. The social worker at the hospital had explained to me our options; however we are without insurance, waiting on approval from social security administration for disability and Medicare. Our options are not very good. Daniel was the main provider for our family. It will be 3-6 months before he may be approved for benefits. During this time my mom Carmel will not be able to work as she will be the main care taker for Daniel. We can not afford nurses, or a nursing home facility. Prior to the stroke, Daniel had recently been called back to work. He had been laid off due to covid and reorganization of the company. Since he had only been employed for less than 30 days then short term and long term disability is not an option. No one likes asking for help, however we never imagined that we would be in this situation. My mom and papa need help with bills, living expenses, medical supplies, and cost of the medications needed for Daniel’s recovery. Anything anyone can do will be greatly appreciated.
