My name is Daniel, and I'm 36 years old. I've been making sushi for the past 18 years, and it's become more than just a job. It's a deep passion that's shaped much of my life. For years I've worked 6 nights a week, fully immersed in the fast paced rhythm of sushi kitchens. What kept me going wasn't just the work itself, but the creativity involved in crafting each dish and the meaningful relations I built with both coworkers and customers along the way.
Unfortunately, due to ongoing health issues, I've recently had to step back from the work I love.
I’ve undergone three heart surgeries to treat persistent atrial fibrillation, but unfortunately, each procedure has only provided temporary relief before my symptoms returned. My atrial fibrillation is caused by something called Mitral Valve Regurgitation (a leaky heart valve.) It is in its early stages and not a severe enough case to suggest operation, therefore my medical team will be monitoring its progression for the time being. On top of that, I’ve been struggling with severe ankle pain for the past three years, which led to an ankle fusion surgery this year. Because of the surgery, I’ve been non-weight bearing for three months, which has made it impossible for me to work and support myself as I normally would.
Even with insurance, the out-of-pocket costs have been overwhelming. I’m now facing bills for the surgeries themselves, as well as for CT scans, x-rays, lab work, echocardiograms, and ongoing medications. The financial strain has been immense, and it’s been difficult to focus on my recovery while worrying about how to pay off this debt. I recently received the green light to start putting weight on my ankle and begin the long process of learning to walk again. Reaching my fundraiser amount would take a huge weight off my shoulders, allowing me to focus on healing and moving forward without the constant stress of mounting medical bills.
Your support would mean the world to me as I work toward recovery and try to regain my independence. Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for considering a donation to help me get back on my feet.
