In January, my life changed in an instant when I was hit by a car while riding my electric scooter at 54 mph. The impact left me with a broken ankle—the bone was sticking out and my foot was facing backwards. I also broke my tailbone, right hand, eye socket, and nose, and suffered severe road rash all over my face and body. Since then, I've had five surgeries on my ankle, but complications set in when the hardware became infected. We had to remove it early, and now I go to Lee Memorial Hospital every day for infusions, hoping my ankle will heal. Unfortunately, the doctor believes it may break again, which would mean more surgery and starting the process over. It might be another year before I can walk again.

This accident has turned my world upside down. I lost my job and am struggling to keep up with basic expenses. I don’t have insurance, and I was denied Medicaid, so every doctor visit comes with a co-pay I can barely afford. Most days, I rely on Lyft rides to get to appointments, and my wife has been doing everything she can to help, but it’s become too much for her. We’re falling behind on rent, phone bills, and medical supplies, and I can’t get any outside help.
