M.L. and Dan met at the U.S. Naval Academy in 1977. Despite Dan being a “plebe” (newbie, fourth class) and M.L. being a senior (First Class, final year) their shared faith rapidly created a lasting bond. When I married M.L. and Dan married Annette, the group expanded, and we have enjoyed a wonderful friendship.
Forty-five years later, we are still “best buds”. It has been a life of shared experiences, and shared journeys. When Dan and Annette moved their family to Central Oregon, it was because we encouraged them to come. When their youngest son, Phil decided to pursue a career in engineering, it was largely due to M.L.’s mentoring advice.
We’ve walked a lot of life together, and now we are in a new journey. This is one we would not have chosen. But friends are for the hard times, not just the good times.
Just before Christmas of 2022, Dan went to the ER on medical advice for what he believed to be a possible complication due to his long term battle with chronic pain.
Instead, Dan received a diagnosis of stage four colorectal cancer with liver involvement.
In the weeks since, Annette and Dan have moved to Boston where their son Phil and his family live. This allows them access to an advanced cancer treatment facility.
Recent tests show the cancer has grown noticeably in the days since the initial recognition and diagnosis. Testing is continuing, with DNA analysis of the cancer to hopefully allow a targeted treatment of the malignancies.
While we remain hopeful and pray for successful treatment and healing, the realities of this journey are incredibly stressful and financially overwhelming.
Annette and Dan are grateful for the amazing support of family and friends, as people have become aware, the outpouring of love and prayer has helped to sustain them.
As their friends, we know that many of you will want to help.
We all can pray. They need every prayer, and we know God hears when we pray. We know that He loves Annette and Dan, and we know that each person who prays for them increases and strengthens their faith and that encourages them in the midst of this journey.
Some of you may be able to help them financially. Anyone who has experienced a medical condition of this nature knows the financial impact it has on the family. There are so many costs that add up quickly: travel, moving, medical expenses, medicines, missed work, regular trips to medical treatment, meals….
However we may try to be prepared for the unexpected, it is still - the unexpected - and it often proves to be more than we could anticipate.
Annette and Dan have always lived with open doors. They have welcomed those in need, and supported kids, friends, families, work family, music family, and their church families.
Now, they are in a time of need. They would not want anyone to feel pressured to give. But if God has provided you with a little extra, and you have the resources to assist them, we know they will be very grateful, and we firmly believe that God will bless you as you bless them.
We have created this site so those who are able may give conveniently. Please continue to pray, and may God richly bless you.
