My name is Damiana. I am a tenant organizer and advocate in Washington, DC. As of last week, my fiancé lost her job and my partner is in imminent danger of eviction (scheduled for this Friday). Today, one of my cats, Dante, fell four stories from my apartment window due to a messed up window screen. He is now in critical condition and I have used all my savings to get him the urgent medical care he needs. I was hoping to use my savings to keep myself and my family housed, but this freak accident today has changed everything.
I have never fundraised for myself before, but since this is such a crazy series of unfortunate emergencies, I felt it would be wise to at least try. Thank you if you can do anything to support. It means the world to me as I know there are so many things happening today. Most importantly, I want to be at least financially stable so I can get back to doing what I love most — fighting for a shared future, a world that is and works for everyone. Though it seems impossibly far at this moment, I hope, with your help, that we can persist.
Transparency about why I set the goal to $10k:
I had this exact amount in savings. If I did not pay it, Dante would not have been admitted to the hospital, so I emptied my account.
Rent arrears are up to $3,600 right now and I want to make sure we can stay living where we are. We only have one income now ($64k) and unfortunately our rent is $2,400 which of course will be due again on June 1. There is a strong possibility that the hospital expenses will go beyond what I already paid (healthcare for animals and humans is such a crazy scam), for example, I just found out he needed a blood transfusion which was not originally on my invoice. Any other remaining funds I will most likely spend on food.
