We are reaching out on behalf of our cousin Donovan and his husband, Damian, two of the most hardworking, humble, and kind people you could meet. They’ve been together for 19 years and have always been the ones helping others, rarely asking for help themselves. But now, they truly need it.

In June 2023, Damian was diagnosed with a detached retina and needed emergency surgery to save his sight. Even though insurance wouldn’t cover the cost due to a $10,000 deductible, he went forward with the $8,000 surgery because there was no choice. Without it, he could have gone blind.

Both Damian and Donovan work full-time managing restaurants, putting in long hours on their feet. While Damian had to take time off for recovery after the first surgery, he’s been working ever since, doing everything he can to keep them afloat. But between the medical debt, loss of transportation, and high housing costs, they eventually lost their apartment and had to move into a small motel room.

The only thing standing between them and getting back into a home is the steep deposit required to keep their four beloved cats, their family. They refuse to abandon them, even though that choice has meant longer hardship and tighter living conditions.

Now, Damian needs a final eye surgery to fully restore his vision. He will need to take more time off work to recover, and the cost of this next procedure is $6,500. He will be having a cataract surgery on his left eye. They will laser off the cataract and then insert an artificial lens that will allow him to see. With his vision being so bad, the doctor has opted to have a lens in his right eye as well so his vision wouldn’t be lopsided, as it has been since the retina surgery.

$6500 will cover the artificial lenses, anesthesia, and surgical staff needed for both eyes. Once it’s done, Damian will finally be able to see clearly again and get back to a normal life.

This isn’t just about his sight though, it’s about helping two incredibly hardworking people regain stability after an unbelievably tough last couple years.
