Hello! I normally do not like to do things like this, but I was involved in a serious accident while rollerblading. While trying to land a trick I'd been practicing, I fell off the ramp and my face landed on the concrete. I shattered my three front teeth that pushed into my maxilla bone, shattering that bone as well. I have been in extreme pain for the past ten days and was able to regain some of my ability to speak this past Tuesday. I will not be able to speak or eat normally until all dental procedures are completed, which can take up to 8-12 months.
My first procedure today was the removal of the shattered pieces of teeth that remained, removal of shattered maxilla bone, and a bone graft to be able to receive three front dental implants. Due to the extensive amount of maxilla bone loss, there is a possibility that I will need a second bone graft which might require removing a piece of jaw bone to graft onto the first bone graft. to hold in place it would require a plate and screws. I would then have to wait another three months to heal. After that procedure then I would be able to get the implants and wait another three months to heal before they would be able to put a crown onto the implants.
Currently, my dental insurance will not pay. They said I have a year's waiting period. My medical insurance said it has to be medically necessary. My doctor explained to me that the only medically necessary procedure is the removal of the three shattered teeth so that there are no other complications. Everything else is considered by the insurance company to be cosmetic and they choose not to pay. the loss of these three teeth has caused me to not be able to talk and eat properly. Currently, my family and I are waiting to see if the insurance will cover more because it is medically necessary. It is hard to say if they will because since the start of 2021 I have been having coverage issues with my Bright Health insurance. To explain an issue I had with them, I needed DME (Durable medical equipment) for my feet that cost nearly $500. They chose not to cover it because they do not believe it is necessary even though it is affecting the development of my feet and legs. I have had to pay multiple increased co-payments to see this specialist and the doctor has done nothing for me.
This money will cover the price of the dental implants needed for me to be able to speak and eat properly again. Due to the extent of my shattered teeth and bone, I will need newly grafted bone, implants, and crowns to be able to speak and eat normally again. Each implant cost $4,500 and I put an extra $500 as the goal as a cushion for any complications in this process. I would show you all a picture of my jaw/teeth, however, I still cannot completely open my mouth on my own at this time.
While all of this is happening I am enrolled in three summer classes because I was slated to graduate at the end of July with a degree in Journalism and Mass Communications with a minor in Spanish. From NC A&T State University. I am currently working hard to regain my ability to speak and I would not want this accident to affect my future career endeavors. Please help in any way that you can! if you do not have the funds I ask that you direct this to someone who does. Every dollar counts! I am a regular person and I wouldn't ask if I already had a career that could pay for these funds. Thank you so much for your time, you are greatly appreciated, I am thankful for you.
