Yesterday, 5/3, my husband let our dogs out in the backyard to go potty. Five minutes later, he found our beloved husky, Dakota, on the ground, shaky and unable to walk. I rushed home to help care for him, and he had another seizure in my lap. We were able to find an emergency vet an hour away that would take him, and after some testing, they determined that he is diabetic (we had no idea). He is currently suffering from a hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state (HHS), which can cause seizures, muscle atrophy, and potentially damage other organs due to the sugar content in the blood. His initial blood sugar level was 937 when normal is 70-120. He is being treated with an insulin drip and IV fluids for the next few days. This has resulted in a very unexpected and high vet bill that is currently estimated between $3500-4700. Our family is not one to ask for help, but we are desperate to have the funds to be able to give him a chance to live! He is loved and has brought smiles to so many people.
