I recently received Daisy a.k.a. Gertrude from Rescue after being on the euthanasia list at Lee County Domestic Animal Services … hours away from being killed. She wasn’t tested for heartworm until Rescue committed to pulling her ( She was Positive )
Daisy was pulled from Lee County Domestic Animal Services on April 24, and I picked her up on May 8 from a foster.
When I picked her up, I noticed she was having quite the difficulty breathing and was unable to settle at night. She appeared to be in pain, and I brought her immediately to the vet the next morning.
They confirmed she had a horrible urinary tract infection, had fluid in and around her heart, abdomen, and lungs, and had right-sided heart failure with possible kidney failure.
She has finished her antibiotics, received some Lasix, and physically appears more comfortable. However, her breathing continues to be difficult—most definitely as a result of her heart damage/heartworm.
We NEED an echocardiogram to determine the extent of her heartworm infection and whether some of her heart disease symptoms can be relieved with medication moving forward.
She’s a sweet, gentle 12-year-old American bulldog who just wants to be patted and hugged all day.
Her goal of the day is to get as many hugs and belly rubs as she can.
I wasn’t planning on the extra expense this month after taking her—as I thought she would’ve been seen by a vet prior to my obtaining her and my first appointment would be solely for heartworm treatment.
Blindsided me a bit, and I really could use some help …. We couldn’t let the Lee County domestic animal services kill her!
To anyone who knows me, I never ask for anything. I’m usually the one giving the help but now I’m the one that needs it now but not for myself- for Daisy.
I recently lost my sweet 85 pound Pitbull , Butchie to a horrible cancer… the surgery alone to try to save him was over $11,000 but it wasn't enough and I lost him just 5 hours after he came home. So it’s gonna take me a bit to get back on my feet after that hit…..
I was making it work… but having to bring her to the vet ASAP incurred an additional surprise expense I didn’t expect..
Moving forward, Daisy will need repeat labs and an echocardiogram prior to beginning heartworm treatment.
I’m hoping her questionable kidney failure was just a result of having such a horrible urinary infection for so long.
I have an echocardiogram and repeat lab scheduled for June 6 that will be totaling over $578 and depending on the results of that, we will then begin her appropriate heartworm treatment.
Any amount towards her future treatment will be helpful as well because you never know what complications come along the way.
Every dime will go towards this little girl.
I’ve been home making her food so I can control her protein until we know if she has any permanent kidney damage.
I have her on joint supplements and probiotics.
I have a Venmo debit card for her alone to be used for payment of vet bills.
She needs this done ASAP so I can’t delay, and I have to take this first appointment to get her future treatment going.
This little girl deserves to live as comfortably and as healthy as possible.
She has settled in nicely into my home and spends most of her day seeking out love and hugs. I do spend an hour every night giving her a head-to-toe massage to help her settle to be able to sleep.
It would be so nice for her to be able to breathe comfortably …. It breaks my heart watching her… I’m looking forward to that day that she may get some relief. She so deserves it.
I’ve provided a screenshot of the invoice that I paid for as well as the estimate for Friday’s treatment. Any little bit will go along way for her.
