Our Story
For over 30 years, Daily Bread Cambridge has been more than just a wholefoods shop - it's been a cornerstone of our community. As a worker-owned co-operative, we've dedicated ourselves to providing affordable, ethical, organic and plant-based food options. Our commitment to sustainability, fair trade, and community support has made us a haven for those seeking nourishment that's kind to people, animals, and the planet.
However, recent challenges have put our future at risk. Two years ago, Daily Bread Cambridge nearly closed due to the pandemic - and though we were able to weather that storm, a combination of rising costs, funding delays, and an increasingly tough economic climate have strained our resources. Our shelves are thinning, we're struggling to get what we need from suppliers, and staff are worried about their livelihood. We need your support to make a decisive improvement to the business, so that we can continue serving our community and build a more resilient future.
Why Daily Bread Matters
- Ethical Choices: 100% vegetarian and largely vegan products that align with compassionate living.
- Community-Owned: Operated by the very people who serve you, ensuring decisions are made with our community's best interests at heart.
- ♻️ Sustainable Practices: Committed to low packaging, fairtrade and organic sourcing, and reducing our environmental footprint.
- Supporting All: Serving food justice initiatives and working with local charities to ensure everyone has access to quality food. Giving opportunities to work or volunteer for the most vulnerable members of our community.
Our Vision for the Future
With your generous support, we aim not just to survive but to thrive:
- Enhance Visibility: Though the store is vibrant on the inside, from the outside it can be difficult to see what's exciting about Daily Bread Cambridge. We plan to install prominent signage to attract new customers and raise awareness about our wholefoods and our purpose.
- Restock and Expand: Although we still have plenty of variety, the current situation has made it difficult to ensure that some popular favourites are always in stock. We will replenish our shelves with essential products and introduce exciting new items that cater to our community's evolving tastes.
- ☕ Flourishing Café Space: Our outdoor seating area is a great place for a drink in this lovely weather, but it could be far more inviting. By improving the furniture and surroundings, we will develop it into a welcoming outdoor café area where community members can gather, connect and relax.
