The picture I chose is of me, Dad and my sister. Didn’t want to put a recent one on because I know we will get him back to this… I have been so hesitant to do this but considering the circumstances my dad has faced, I have no other options right now.
Feb 22, 2024 my dad went in for a routine neck surgery that lasted only 45 mins. His surgeon, who had done his previous back and neck surgeries prior to this one, came out and said this surgery was a success! I was so happy and hoping my Dad could get back to his normal life then me and my aunts and uncle waited almost 16 hours while my Dad was in recovery because he was not waking up from the surgery and they had to give him narcan to wake him up. He was already having some issues coughing and breathing correctly prior to this surgery but then he developed pneumonia. Once he woke up he was having what is called “ICU Delirium” but he was able to eat and we played cards and thought everything was going good. The next day he started experiencing very low oxygen levels and trouble breathing which lead to him suffering from respiratory arrest. The ICU team at Duke Medical acted quickly, got him intubated and he was finally comfortable. About a week after that episode they decided to do a trac on him and get him off the Intubation tube, he did amazing with that, was pretty much breathing on his own and even went outside to watch the solar eclipse and was singing (well mouthing) “Total Eclipse of the Heart” with all the staff and patients at Duke Medical. They moved him to a trac collar from the ventilator (which only assisted him in breathing unlike the vent that would breath for him.. WIN!) and finally on April 18th he was ready for a step down unit and moved to Durham Regional. While at Durham regional for a month he was struggling coming off the vent completely and was having trouble expelling the Carbon Dioxide from his body and they said he needed to be put in a ventilation facility until he could come off the vent completely. I only had 2 choices in NC and 1 in VA. The first facility that had an opening in NC was about 4 hours away. They had great reviews, a great presence when we got there, but due to ongoing things that transpired while he was there ughh.. I’ll stop there (but message me if you want to know because I have no problem sharing and is the reason I’m doing this go fund me) he is now back in an ICU facility that is more than amazing and they are working with him and helping us find the best care for him! If you want to donate, great, it is so appreciated, if you want to send a card, HE LOVES THEM! I’m just know my Dad will come home and if he does I don’t want him to be overwhelmed with medical bills that have become astronomical not to mention the expenses of hotels and gas because he can not have overnight visitors at the facility he was at nor the one he is going too. Again, yes the money would help, no doubt, but I know My GOD and I know I wouldn’t have gotten past these last 5 months without HIM or all my family and friends! My Dad is a freaking trooper and is pushing through every day but he still has a very long road ahead of him and still unsure of when he can come home. This has truly been a roller coaster of a ride and I just want to thank you all in advance for any donations but especially for all the calls, texts, messages and words of prayers and encouragement!! I know my Dad will beat this! GODS GOT HIM AND SO DO I!
