Last Friday, our dad was rushed to the ER in Sioux Falls with what doctors first thought was a heart attack. He has been in ICU at Sanford ever since, battling AFIB and other complications. On Wednesday, an angiogram revealed major blockages in three arteries, and doctors told us he would need triple bypass surgery.

This news was a shock to our family. We had hoped for a stent or pacemaker, but instead, Dad is facing a much longer and more difficult road to recovery. The surgery itself is only the first step — the months that follow will be filled with healing, rehabilitation, and uncertainty.

Our dad has always been the steady provider for our family. With him out of work for at least three months (and possibly longer), our parents will face financial burdens on top of the emotional and physical challenges. Hotel stays while he’s in the hospital, in-home care once he returns home, and other expenses not fully covered by Medicaid are adding up quickly.
