Help Our Family Overcome A Tough Setback

Hello, my name is Cynthia Jahi, and I’m reaching out to ask for your help as my family and I navigate an incredibly difficult chapter in our lives. We are raising funds to cover essential moving expenses after a series of setbacks that have left us in a challenging financial position.

Our family has been through an unimaginable series of events, and we're now trying to rebuild our lives. We currently have three Public Storage units filled with our belongings, and we desperately need help to move forward. Murphy’s Law has taken its toll on us, but we remain hopeful that with your support, we can overcome this.

What Happened:

2004 – My daughter, Sunshine King, was tragically attacked by her husband. She was a vibrant 24-year-old state employee, wife, mother, model, and professional dancer when she was shot, leaving her paralyzed from the chest down. Amid this horror, her husband took his own life, leaving behind a 3-year-old son who had to face this devastation.

In search of a fresh start, we moved from the harsh winters of Maryland to the warmer climate of New Orleans in January 2005.

August 2005 – Hurricane Katrina struck, displacing us once again, just as we were beginning to settle.

2007 – We moved to Rocky Mount, North Carolina, to provide better therapy for Sunshine and live in a more affordable city.

Over the years, we have struggled to balance caregiving, work, and rebuilding our lives. Sunshine] eventually moved out on her own.

  • In 2015 my sister Kim Williams became the official Caregiver for our Mom who began showing signs of dementia.
February 18, 2020 – Our mom passed away at age 93, just weeks before the country went into lockdown due to COVID-19.

Schools closed in March 2020, and I lost my job, leaving us financially vulnerable.

Despite the grief of losing our mom, Kim, and I continued to search for ways to bring in income, but our efforts were constantly hindered by layoffs and unforeseen financial setbacks.

In 2023, we faced further hardship as my unemployment benefits weren’t enough, and we were given a non-renewal lease on our home. We found ourselves once again uprooted and without a stable place to live.

We’ve worked tirelessly since then, taking on various jobs to get back on our feet. However, layoffs and continued financial challenges have made it incredibly hard to recover.

Our Immediate Need:

We urgently need to raise $15,309 to cover immediate moving expenses and get us back on track:
PLEASE HELP US SAVE OUR BELONGINGS AND GET OURSELVES WHOLE.
Unfortunately as much as I have tried to communicate with management at Public Storage there is no one there to really talk with or to renegotiate with. So your help in saving our Unit will be greatly appreciated.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
HOW THE FUNDS WILL BE USED
$3,630 to unlock two of our storage units.
$2,500 to cover the cost of moving.
$2,000 to purchase two laptops to help us move forward with our public adjuster business and editorial work, as well as to relaunch my children’s program.
$2,300 for unfinished dental work and medical expenses for Sunshine.
$2,300 for unfinished dental work for Cynthia and Kim
$2579 to update our three cell phones and to help with BGE.

Winter weather has made things difficult here in Maryland, and we’re working around snowstorms to make progress. Our goal is to be out of all storage units before the beginning of March, and we can’t do this without your help.

If you can contribute, it would mean the world to us. Every donation, no matter the size, will bring us closer to getting back on our feet and starting fresh. Thank you for taking the time to read our story and for your support during this challenging time.

This hardship does not have anything to do with the recent attack in New Orleans.

With heartfelt gratitude,
Cynthia W. Jahi
