Cyclone Idai Victims of Beira, Mozambique

Cyclone Idai ravaged Mozambique, Malawi, and Zimbabwe on the 14th of March 2019, leaving behind a trail of destruction, killing more than 1000 people and leaving over 400,000 people homeless.

Beira, the fourth largest city in Mozambique was especially affected. The once-bustling port, home to about half a million people, was badly damaged by high winds and flooding. Approximately 90 percent of the city's infrastructure was destroyed by the storm. Relief poured in from all around the world to help with emergency medical supplies, food, and temporary shelters.

It’s been over a month since this tragedy occurred, disrupting lives of these people, who while they are still mourning the loss of their loved ones, are themselves struggling to survive. Tens of thousands of families are homeless and living in schools, tents, and churches without basic amenities for day to day living. It is going to be a long road to recovery, rebuilding homes, roads, and lives. This fundraiser is an effort to raise the funds to help rebuild homes and provide shelter for a small part of the people who lives are disrupted.

Current situation there is being shared with us by our extended family who lives there and is working with a local church within a small community to raise funds to help rebuild the homes.

WHAT WILL THE MONEY BE USED FOR:

The local church in Mafambisse, which is 55Kms away from Beira is raising funds to rebuilt houses for families whose homes were washed away. These families are currently staying in shelter accommodation centers. This fundraiser is an effort to help the church lead the rebuilding effort.  The scope is to build low-cost homes for impacted families. 100% of the money collected here goes directly to rebuilding homes.

Tri-Valley Telugu Community, a non-profit organization based in North America is working to raise funds for this cause. We look to your support in raising the funds. Any amount you give will go a long way in rebuilding their lives.  Approximate cost of each home is around $2000.  Shown here is the actual home plan.

WHO WILL MANAGE THIS EFFORT IN BEIRA :

We will work with the Diocese of Mafambisse, where the funds will be transferred to the Church’s Idai Relief account. We will be working with Priest Jorge, Brother Rafael, Diacono Gijo and Priest Miguel, who are leading the efforts on the ground.
