Mural Fundraising for the Academy of Kempo Karate
We are raising funds to create a mural for the Academy of Kempo Karate, one of Charlotte's oldest dojos, located in the Oakdale neighborhood on the West Side. The Academy invests in our youth by fostering self-esteem and respect through affordable programs for all ages. Funds raised will be used to compensate artists for their labor and to purchase the necessary materials for the mural.
More About the Academy
The Academy of Kempo Karate is the oldest martial arts school in the Charlotte area, having been at the same location since 1977—a remarkable 47 years for a martial arts school. Many of our longtime students, whom we taught as children, now bring their own kids to us for training. This enduring legacy has established us as a respected institution in the community.
Our school emphasizes real-world self-defense while building confidence and good character. We offer classes in Kempo for self-defense and Tai Chi for health. Classes for kids are grouped by age: 4 to 6, 7 to 9, and 10 to 12. At age 13, students transition into our adult program.
We teach a style of Kempo known as Shorinji Toraken Ryu, which incorporates soft fist techniques such as joint locks, joint manipulation, throws, and takedowns, alongside hard fist techniques including striking, blocking, and kicking. Additionally, we instruct on the defensive and offensive use of various weapons.
In our Tai Chi program, we teach a style called Emperor’s Longfist, which enhances physical health, balance, and mental clarity. Our Tai Chi practice involves slow, controlled movements combined with deep breathing techniques.
