Many of you know me as energetic, driven, active, and healthy, but only a handful of you know that I have been battling Scoliosis for most of my life. I have seen doctors in several countries, and all had different opinions regarding the future progression of my spinal curve.
Despite knowing the odds, I continued to be as normal and active as possible, believing that spinal fusion was not the best option. Even though I could not fulfill my dream of joining the military, I did many things like studying abroad and doing sports like golf and soccer.
Unfortunately, the many years of intense training and therapy were not enough. The curve even caused my right shoulder to dislocate so often that it required several corrective surgeries to keep it in place. I also notice that the back pain is more severe and constant, with most days ending in physical exhaustion.
I cannot avoid the reality that my curve has progressed more than we had hoped, and the only way to slow it down is by performing a complete spinal fusion from the neck down. Given the mixed opinions over the science of my back, I do not regret using surgery as a last resort option, but I, unfortunately, cannot wait any longer.
I am blessed to be near some of the best doctors globally, but my insurance will not foot the bill well enough for me to manage the final expenses. Adding another huge surgery expense to my huge student loans and the other medical costs that I have endured over the years is challenging.
My crowdfunding target is $8200. This covers the surgery expenses and should cap me out of further out-of-pocket expenses. Anything beyond the target will go into my recovery expenses.
Crowdfunding for major medical procedures is uniquely American compared to other developed nations. Therefore, reaching out for help from my friends and family is no small request. Hence, I appreciate every donation that will lessen the financial impact of my surgery and allow me to focus on my recovery.
